 Linda Barker

UKOUG President & former Global Corporate Applications Director, Atkins

The highs and lows of my business / IT / Oracle / Career:

Highs: The highs definitely outweigh the lows and I've had the good fortune to lead some very exciting Oracle rollouts and system extensions around the world including implementing JD Edwards and Oracle E-Business Suite in the Middle East, India and China.

Lows: My first Oracle ERP experience in 2002 was helping to turn around a failed JD Edwards and Oracle E-Business Suite implementation which had contributed to a huge drop in share price for the company concerned. The team and I worked round the clock to recover the system which was exhausting but very satisfying when we finally got it (and the company) working as planned. The lessons learned from that experience have stuck with me throughout my Oracle career.

My contribution to the Oracle community:

I'm a huge admirer of the work of UKOUG and I've benefited a great deal over the years from the networking and learning opportunities it provides, as well as its influence within the Oracle community. Having received so much from the organisation I’d like to be able to give something back by taking up a voluntary role and helping to continue the great work of the UKOUG.

Skills and strengths I intend to bring to UKOUG:

I have a rounded interest in the Oracle application portfolio, not aligned to any one particular product or work stream. I've worked at Director level for several years and have led the Oracle applications team in WS Atkins for over 13 years. I'm a good communicator at all levels of an organisation, able to bridge the gap between technology and end users.

An improvement I would make to UKOUG:

I think the face to face events are great opportunities to network and learn from each other but the addition of an online forum/community for UKOUG end users to share ideas and network in-between SIGs could really help to bring the community together. We could also use this as a platform to crowd source ideas for improvements to the UKOUG.
