Adventures in Dataguard

This presentation covers our practical experience with Data Guard, including configuration, problems solved and extra uses to which we have put our standby database.

I will begin with an introduction to Data Guard, in particular physical standby. I will go on to show various opportunities for utilising your standby, including opening it read-only (e.g. for management reporting) and opening it read-write (e.g. to allow testing of system upgrades). I will cover the use of flashback technology to reinstate your database as a standby after it has been opened read-write.

I will also describe some issues that we have encountered with our physical standby configuration. There will also be a discussion of the mechanism we are using to switchover to the standby database.
