Archiving and purging in a security context

My focus has always been in database security and one area that often causes me concern is the lack of management of log files, trace files and particularly audit trails. Often sites employ audit trails at the application layer but omit to do the same at the database layer, or if they do they have no firm plans to review the audit trails and usually no ideas on how to archive and purge them. Particularly there are also aspects of archive and purge that cause extra concerns for audit and logs, these are explored in details along with a practical discussion of archive and purging in a security context.
