Why did you first engage with the user group?
I worked for a large Oracle Partner and felt we needed to 'do our bit' for the community, and I also felt that the end customers deserved the access to Oracle that we had. UKOUG is the biggest customer voice for UK.
What value did you find through UKOUG?
A faster route to understanding what users want, what Oracle are doing and how it really works, all achieved through the network UKOUG facilitates. As a volunteer right through to President, UKOUG has helped me grow in my career and the service I have given to customers.
What about UKOUG membership has surprised you?
The network I strived for has also generated real friends and led to experiences outside of IT that I would never have dreamt of, like learning to scuba dive. UKOUG is definintly where work and play mix.
Is there a specific example where engaging with UKOUG has had a direct beneficial result for you and your company?
Strengthening the voice of the user when working with Oracle development, I led the user group input into Fusion Applications and UKOUG was the conduit. Later that access was invaluable in my partner role and as I step out as an independent, everything I have learnt has been honed in my role at UKOUG.
What are the top three reasons you would recommend membership to another Oracle user?
- Experts teaching the high level content and drilling down further on areas of interest
- Networking with similar organisations, discussing shared challenges and ‘crowd sourcing’ possible solutions
- Listening to others who have tried something; sharing what worked and what didn’t work
