As an Enterprise Integration Architect in a multinational company, Phil's primary focus is to set and manage the strategies and approaches for how they build and integrate systems together. Phil then takes these principles to support the Solution Architects embedded in programmes of delivery. Phil also carries a wider technology focus which picks up on things such as mobile.
Why did you first engage with the user group?
Specsavers are new into the Oracle ecosystem and joining UKOUG provided us with a great chance to hear from and learn from experiences of others that have been there and done that - get a taste of reality. Not only that, but to also get exposure to new and potentially different ideas. All of which may show us we're going to run into challenges, or actually we're on the right track.
What SIG/s do you attend and why do you find them informative?
Middleware SIG and periodically Development SIG. Other collegaues attend the domain specific SIGs such as Financials and Supply Chain.
Is there a specific example where engaging with UKOUG has had a direct beneficial result for you and your company?
A lot of the benefits we've gained from membership are difficult to measure. Having had an opportunity to discuss ideas and find other Oracle customers have the same insights or thoughts has been very helpful.
What are the top three reasons you would recommend membership to another Oracle user?
1. Oracle present at some of the SIGs so you get to see what is coming along in the future, or information about where to get more detailed information.
2. SIGs offer the chance to quiz SMEs (both Oracle and independent).
3. SIGs are smaller than the big conference sessions like Open World so can flex to where attendees take conversation.
Any final comments?
UKOUG have proven to be a great source of information and insight, with an opportunity to communicate with people who actually make the products and technologies from Oracle work in a wide range of contexts.
