Name: Debra LilleyDebra Lilley

Organisation: DCL

Job Title: Director

Tell us about your role in a couple of sentences:
Helping organisations to understand how the Oracle offerings can make them more successful.

Why did you first get into IT?: accident! A long but funny story I have shared in my blog and has been covered in a couple of newspaper articles, geekybarbie and computer weekly.

What advice would you give to people, especially women looking for a role in IT?:
Go for it, start with either a small company that will give you very close mentoring or a big company with a set program. At every stage offer to go further than the basics, question what you see and look for solutions. IT is about using technology to collect, understand and use information. To make that work you need people who think beneath the surface and you can do that.

Have you encountered any issues with being a woman in IT?:
In my 30+ years the only real issue I have come across is whilst being on projects as a consultant. You often have to work away from home, living in hotels for weeks sometimes months at a time. Often I have been the only woman on a project and that has not worried me at all, but I have had colleagues wives be paranoid that means affairs.

Any final comments?:
IT is a fantastic career, because it is so varied, and as long as you bring value to your employer you should be able to drive your own path. Go for it!
