Job Title: Consultant

Company: Veriton Limited and O-box Products Ltd

Tell us about yourself in 50 words:
I'm primarily a Fusion Middleware enthusiast though I enjoy working on most areas of Oracle infrastructure. I am also chair of the UKOUG Applications Server SIG.

What is your main goal in life?
Much of my energy at the moment is going into my new company's first product - the O-box SOA Appliance. As for goals I suppose they're like most of us: to be happy, healthy and hopefully achieve a few worthwhile things along the way!

What are your interests (inside and outside of work)?
Most of my hobbies involve creating things, though maybe not in a very artistic sense (my wife would say ‘creating a mess!’). I have rather too many DIY projects on the go: refurbishment of an old house, an automated central heating system that is probably too sophisticated for its own good and a car in the garage in need of some TLC! Plus over the last couple of years I prefer to spend my free time out and about with my young family.

Why did you want to become a UKOUG volunteer?
It wasn't a conscious decision - although I'd been attending the Application Server SIG since it started. I only decided to become deputy chair in 2007 as it seemed "the right thing to do". As it happened the Chair emigrated to Australia a few months later so I found myself in the lofty position of Chair rather sooner than expected...

What volunteering activities do you undertake?
SIG Chair and sitting on the working group for the UKOUG Tech conference. This involves setting the event's agenda and sourcing and reviewing speakers and content for inclusion.

Which volunteer contribution are you proudest of?
I went out on a limb a bit a couple of years ago organising the first Middleware Sunday at UKOUG 2012. I wasn't sure how many people would turn up early on a Sunday for quite specialised content. We were aiming for 30 but the event filled up to 50 over a week before conference.
The day itself was a lot of fun, leading to the WebLogic Hackathon at UKOUG Tech13 and I'm sure other hands-on days in the future.

What is the best thing about volunteering?
Simple - the people I meet

What's most rewarding about volunteering?
For the SIGs it's easy: the content on the agenda  covers the areas I and most of the audience are most interested in - it's like having my own custom-made training!
