UKOUG attends Oracle OpenWorld to ensure we understand the latest news and updates from Oracle to help us with planning our member products and services. We also attend as part of the international User Group community where the European Oracle User Community has a stand to encourage customers to participate in user groups along with taking the opportunity to meet and sharing experience and best practice.
This year I attended Oracle OpenWorld as a representative of UKOUG.
Here is my summary from Oracle Open World 2013
- OOW2013 was notable for clarifying Oracle’s direction in hardware, cloud and big data, as well as some new product introductions in the hardware and cloud space in particular.
- Oracle offered its clearest vision yet of its long-term strategy for the hardware assets acquired from Sun in January 2010, painting a picture of a 'datacenter of the future' made up of purpose-built appliances around a core of 'commodity' general-purpose servers.
- In the Cloud space we saw the completion, at least in terms of announced plans, of Oracle's end-to-end cloud stack, including comprehensive PaaS, IaaS and SaaS offerings, with 10 new services in the Oracle Public Cloud. Although 7 of the 10 new services are only available in preview; including at least 3 that were earlier announced at OpenWorld 2012, it does confirm Oracle's direction around Cloud but a considerable lag between announcement and availability
- Oracle's big data strategy was extended with an introduction of both a software in-memory option for the Oracle Database and a hardware appliance with very high memory, enabling Oracle to offer an option for customers of its relational database technology, on par with in-memory and alternative data management approaches taken by other vendors
- In addition to the strategic announcements, Oracle offered some insight into emerging focus areas, such as customer experience, a key business focus for many businesses and the "Internet of Things"
- In the applications space there were many enhancements announced particularly to Customer Experience Cloud, but also for ERP and HCM Cloud applications. I would have liked to have seen more visibility of Fusion applications customers and look forward to more from Oracle on that in the coming months.
As a User Group representative what did I get up to?
- I spent some time on the EOUC stand on Monday. It was a great opportunity to meet both members and customers who gave lots of positive feedback on the technical sessions they had been attending on Oracle 12C. I also had the opportunity to meet with a number of other User Group leaders and it was interesting to hear that many are grappling with similar challenges as UKOUG so a great opportunity to share ideas and best practice
- On Monday evening I attended, along with James and Debra, the User Group Presidents' reception, hosted by Oracle. This was a further opportunity to meet user group leaders from around the world and hear what they are getting up to
- On Tuesday, James and I met Mary-Lou Dopart, Oracle Global Customer Programs leader. Oracle Global Customer Programs are an important interface for UKOUG into Oracle and is important that we ensure we continue the excellent working relationship we have with them. It was great to meet Mary Lou and go through UKOUG plans and share the progress on our two Flagship Conferences. We rely on Mary-Lou's team to support our conferences with speakers and was really pleased to hear how well our changes have been received by our members since our agendas went live.
Oracle Open World is a real experience - Oracle paint San Francisco red. It's hard work, exhausting and fun all at the same time. It's important for UKOUG to there, to be part of the world wide user group community and to understand Oracle strategy and direction. It's also good to come back excited about what's happening in the Oracle world so we can bring the right focus to our members.
