Development SIG 'Mobilised'!

10 September 2014

A round-up of September's UKOUG Development SIG from Andrew Davies, Development SIG Committee

If you're not already familiar with it, the UKOUG Development Special Interest Group (SIG) serves the interests of developers, designers, modellers, architects and those who need or want to keep abreast of the state of the art when it comes to development technologies and their application, usage and integration.

We cover a wide range of fields and recent SIG meetings have covered topics such as:

  • JDeveloper and the Application Development Framework (ADF)
  • SQL Developer and SQL Developer Data Modeler
  • Modelling, architecture and design
  • Development for mobile platforms
  • Oracle Forms modernisation

The September SIG held at the Oracle Customer Visitor Centre, Thames Valley Park, Reading, was the third and final SIG meeting of 2014 and was dedicated to a review of development for mobile platforms. Mobile platforms in this context means tablet and smartphone devices.

The presentations on the day included:

  • Coverage of the ways of developing and deploying applications on mobile devices
  • Security considerations when deciding how mobile platforms should be integrated into the business
  • Developing Oracle APEX applications targeted for mobile platforms
  • A demonstration of Oracle's Mobile Application Framework
  • Developing for iOS under the Apple Developer Program
  • A sneak peak at the shape of Clouds to come

The presenters included Martin Cookson, Susan Duncan, Duncan Mills, Grant Ronald and Paul Toal all from Oracle, and Paul Chester of Sibylline Solutions Limited.

The presentations were very well received by the delegates and throughout the day I reflected how far mobile development has come since the SIG first covered the subject almost three years ago.

It remains a topic which is gaining momentum as businesses begin to understand how mobile devices can transform the way they work and one which we will revisit in the near future.

Planning is now underway for next year’s events. Any ideas or suggestions for themes or topics to be covered can be submitted to the committee. It’s your user group so have your say!
