Time: 1:30 PM - 2:15 PM

Track: Track 1

Many years ago I worked on the ICL Search Accelerator (S-CAFS)  which was a SCSI version of the Content-Addressable File System (CAFS) developed for ICL Mainframe database query acceleration. The development of this innovative query off-loading product for the popular RDBMS products of the day directly led to the development of the Direct Path Read functionality in Oracle and eventually to the Oracle Database Machine engineered system. Most things in life are circular and this has gone from hardware to software and back to hardware again. This presentation will chart the development of query off-loading technology and look at how the Oracle Database Machine has become much more than this and led to a range of other engineered systems. We will also look at the typical components of Oracle engineered systems and how best to monitor them using standard Oracle tools like ASR and OEM.
