The UKOUG Systems Event 2015 took place on 20th May at the subtly located Cavendish Conference Centre. With special guest Oscar the robot working the room, and delegates socialising and checking out the exhibition stands, attendees were set for a fun informative day.
After consuming delicate pastries, teas and coffees provided by the stylish venue, the day kicked off with a bang. The first session was a keynote speech from Roger MacNicol, a consulting Engineer at Oracle; informing delegates about his work with SmartScan. Sharing his high level of expertise, his talk was "very good, and in-depth in places" (Zahid Anwar, Version 1) helping set the pace for the day. This multi streamed event, gave the delegates a wide range of content to chose from.
With two specified networking times as well as the post event social, there were plenty of opportunities to check out the jam packed exhibition stands. Exhibiting were Oracle, Red Stack Tech, and HGST Solutions, there was a variety of cool tech on display with helpful staff presenting their business expertise to the attending end users. One popular gadget featured in the exhibition room was Oscar the RedStack Robot, who with a mind of his own socialised with the attendees, helping create a friendly atmosphere and entertained the crowds.
The delegates were treated to pizza’s and salad served in funky branded pizza slice boxes provided by Red Stack Tech, the catering sponsor, delegates were relaxed and refreshed ready for an afternoon of varied sessions. With topics covered such as Exadata, Database Memory, Operational Management, MultiTenancy, and HCC Mechanics. Tim Hall’s talk; ‘A Cure for Virtual Insanity: A Vendor-Neutral Introduction to Virtualization with the Hype’was received as "useful, interesting and well presented” (Andy Wrigley, NHSBT)
The agenda rounded off with a Q&A session featuring Jason Arneil, Martin Bach, Till Hall, Simon Haslam, Frits Hoogland and Roger MacNicol with questions centring around a variety of topics such as Virtualisation and the Cloud, Middleware and the challenges of Enterprise Management. The panel came back to all questions asked with detailed and informative responses. The day finished with the social, delegates were able to unwind and work on their professional connections over a glass of wine and an Oracle sponsored beer!
"It's only in places like this that all the knowledge comes together" (Chris Slattery, Version 1- Speaker). The UKOUG Systems Event was a successful knowledge filled day for all its Solaris and Systems delegates, helping benefit the Oracle community, and showing delegates the benefits their UKOUG membership can bring.
Thinking of attending Tech15? Here's why you should:
"The Systems event has covered three streams; mainly focusing on Enterprise Systems, which acts as a good warm up for Tech15 as all the speakers here, will also be there, and all five Systems streams will be covered. These condensed events are great but at Tech15, you will have the opportunity to come back and ask the speakers any questions you may have from the day before. It’s amazing how many discussions happen after a talk, and networking at an event like Tech15 gives you such a wider connection scope than networking at an event with mainly experts in their specific fields."
