UK Oracle User Group

HCM Community Applications Innovation Day

8 June 2015

We held the first of our Applications Innovation Days last week for HCM users. Read on to find out how the day went and what users discovered...

Oracle started writing their E Business Suite Applications around 20 years ago and the acquired applications were born not much later. Whilst Oracle has continuously enhanced them and will still do so, increasingly organisations are looking for at least the same functionality and the improved user experience of modern technology and the recognition of all that cloud offers. Application users at UKOUG are thirsty for both information on where their applications are going and what is available in the new Cloud. Balancing this is a challenge we are tackling this year by a series of community events focused on Applications Innovation and a clever agenda at conference.

Applications Innovation isn’t just about Cloud but that is a really big part of it. Oracle had held their Modern Business Applications Days in May, which looked at ‘Why’ so our events are concentrating on the ‘How’. The first was the HCM Community Applications Innovation Day held at the Oracle offices on 4th June.  In the morning we heard from 3 customers about their journey.

Barry Chamberlin head of the Hitachi UK HCM Practice introduced Raj Rajani who led their implementation. They were already one of the biggest users of Taleo (pre acquisition) so were not new to Cloud but this was a massive undertaking. As a consultancy they had tools of their own to use, but it was still a learning exercise but they are confident that as they go live it will bring their global organisation together.

Our next customer Sarah Wormell from Standard Life talked about how a year after they went live on Cloud as part of a massive HR Transformation Program, which included co-existence with an EBS Shared Service, they are now moving from project to business as usual. They are looking now at adopting more cloud functionality and were very interested in our third customer JT Group who was the first in the world to go live with Oracle Time & Labor. Sue Webber from JT talked about how their business transformation was so dramatic and Oracle Cloud was what bought all their people together. She also talked about how little training their employees needed to use self-service.

UKOUG members love customer stories and with Oracle Cloud having been available for just over 3 years, the number of real customers is gaining momentum and we will have many more in the future. We also need to cater for these organisations in their own journey, and we have launched a forum for Cloud Customers focused on the experience of being in the Cloud rather than the specific functionality.

One of the great benefits of Cloud is the continuous enhancements which are made available through business as usual, not a major upgrade project. So in the afternoon we had our HCM Oracle Liaison Jules Peters give us an overview of what is in the next release and then Daan Van Egmond from Oracle Strategy who talked about localizations and in particular UK Payroll integrations, something that is very important to this community. Tim Warner who is EBS HCM Chair closed the day with a quick review of the recent HCM World in the US.

This was a really engaging day with lots of conversations, attended by EBS, Taleo, PeopleSoft and JDE users plus partners with great feedback from all.
