The multitenant architecture was "the" headline feature announced in Oracle Database 12c. On the surface pluggable databases sounds great, but are they really? This presentation will explain the parts of your systems that will break if you move to pluggable databases, but why you should probably use them anyway.

PDFIndexing & New Technology

Oracle Scene - Issue 62

Over the last 8 years there have been many dramatic changes to the technology underpinning the Oracle RDBMS. We have Exadata systems, in-memory columnar storage, container database, and the move to Cloud computing. The changes in software apply not only to the storage mechanisms but also to the optimizer features available.

Despite all the change, though, there’s still the common hope that we can make the most cost-effective use of the technologies we’ve licensed and, for critical systems, that still means understanding how to create the best indexing strategies.

PDFPerformance For All Editions on ODA X6-2S/M

Oracle Scene - Issue 62

The Oracle Database Appliance is not new. The idea comes from early 2002 with the 'Row Iron' plan: an appliance with Sun server and Oracle Database. The idea was resurrected in 2011 with ODA V1 and has evolved through capacity and flexibility to X3-2, X4-2 and X5-2. This year the new one, X6-2 has been announced with some major changes:
• Multiple models: X6-2S, X6-2M and the previous X5 is renamed 'HA'.
• Single server models (2S and 2M) whereas previous ODAs were all 2-nodes clusters
• Ability to run Standard Edition (previous models were only for Enterprise Edition)
This article describes the 'Small' and 'Medium' models that are out at the time of writing. A 'Large' one will extend the range of those ODA 'Lite' soon.

DOCXAgile Development With Oracle IaaS & PaaS

Published: 22.12.2016 - This document is restricted to members

Footage from Duncan Mills & Chris Tonas' Digital Keynote presentation at Tech16:

New cloud technologies have emerged that enable developers to quickly develop or deploy, easily maintain, and elastically scale applications without needing to manage or manually scale server infrastructure. Whether you are modernising or extending existing on-premises or cloud applications, or creating new applications in the cloud, join this session to learn about the latest trends in rapid application development/deployment and DevOps, including microservices, Docker, and APIs. The session shows how enterprise developers can quickly build, deploy, or manage browser or mobile-fronted, API-first autoscaling applications within minutes.

Duncan Mills is senior director and architect within the Oracle Development Tools division and moonlights as a member of the Hudson project at Eclipse. He has been working with Oracle technology for almost 30 years and as a result retains a depressingly large catalogue of facts about some really obscure Oracle products. Nowadays though, Duncan helps Oracles own development groups with architecture, technology selection and troubleshooting, and can often be found holding the hand of bewildered development teams from new acquisitions. Duncan is the co-author of the Oracle Press books Oracle JDeveloper 11g Handbook: A Guide to Fusion Web Development and Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms and PL/SQL Developers: A Guide to Web Development with Oracle ADF. Oh and there's a blog as well, dont forget the blog!
