The UKOUG Systems Event 2016 took place on 12th May at Pimlico’s ETC Venue One Drummond Gate. The sun was shining and delegates enjoyed a jam packed day of technical sessions & networking – all before winding down with a few drinks at the event social.
The day kicked off with an engaging and joke filled keynote from Andrew Sutherland – Senior VP of Technology and Systems Oracle Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Discussing the “pivot” to cloud he explained how Oracle continues to see the benefit of investing in SPARC and Storage to help deliver a smoother experience for the business user. Andrew highlighted that the move to Cloud should be considered as a pivot rather than a move, with the concept of Cloud machines and Private Cloud on premise. Andrews relaxed method of presenting but the audience at ease with Paul Henley commenting “The keynote had some really interesting insights. Sometimes these sorts of sessions are quite Sales based but this one was really useful. Much better than most keynotes I have seen”.
The morning was dominated by technical sessions with a variety of experience levels catered to on topics like HDFS, Hadoop, Solaris, Linux, DbaaS and SPARC SuperCluster. We had some sessions by some fantastic speakers, with one delegate saying “Marcel Hofstetter’s session was the most interesting talk I’ve been to in years”!
Lunch was a feast fit for a king – or a health fanatic – with an enjoyable and well planned lunch. Delegates moved into the garden and enjoyed mingling in the sun before paying the Oracle exhibition stand a visit! With their exemplar T7-1 server they bought along some a number of the newer SPARC chips including the newest M7 chip giving delegates the opportunity to see what Oracle hardware actually looks like from the inside.
With the afternoon streams offering business content as well as some technical sessions, there was a strong turnout for users wanting to know about Oracle Systems from a business view point. Delegates were privy to sessions from Oracle ACEs like Klaas-Jan Jongsma, Kiran Tailor, Martin Bach and Philipe Fierens; and topics covered varied from Infiniband to Analytics.
The day closed with a few glasses of wine and a couple of beers whilst delegates mingled and discussed their favourite topics of the day – even reminiscing about last year’s Oscar the robot! Overall a great day was had by all “There’s been a good variety of topics throughout the sessions. It’s really useful to get the latest industry updates all in one place”.
