Oracle users have high hopes for cloud

61% of Oracle users will roll out a cloud project in the next 12 months

London, 19th January 2010:

Research conducted by the UK Oracle User Group (UKOUG) amongst its
members, in association with Fujitsu, has found that nearly two-thirds are either using cloud services (49%)
or plan to use cloud in the next 12 months (12%). Nearly a third (32%) said that they were considering cloud
projects but did not have immediate plans to implement them in the coming year. Just 7% of users polled
said that they have no plans to use cloud at all.

The research was conducted by UKOUG to ascertain the current level of interest, up-take and concerns
around cloud computing amongst Oracle users. These figures point to a high level of general acceptance in
the benefits of cloud amongst Oracle users, although take up of specific Oracle cloud services was low. Just
7% of Oracle customers currently use Oracle On Demand services.

Key findings:
• The research found that of those who stated that they use cloud services, over half (55%) said they
used Software-as-a-Service. Infrastructure-as-a-Service accounts for 21% of users but just 3% use

• When asked what additional services users could be provided with to help with cloud
implementation, security services came out top, followed by strategy/direction and rapid
implementation services.

• Primary concerns around Cloud for users were governance obstacles, contractual restrictions,
integration with own enterprise systems and vendor lock-in.

• Most popular payment approach is subscription with annual payment and Trusted Cloud (a shared,
semi-private environment) is the preferred model

• The apparent low level (7%) of Oracle On Demand uptake is consistent with earlier research,
undertaken by Fujitsu and UKOUG, (
enterprise-applications/oug-survey-results.html. Oracle On Demand use does not yet
appear to be synonymous with Cloud for users who may require greater complexity and integration
around their vital core systems.

investment in IT and Oracle in particular. The industry is undergoing great change and providing intelligence

UKOUG worked closely with Fujitsu, a strategic global partner with Oracle, to conduct this research amongst
Oracle users. Andy Seferta, European head of Fujitsu’s Oracle Practice comments: “The results show that
Oracle users have a high level of understanding when it comes to Cloud services, with an overwhelming
93% considering cloud as part of their IT strategy. But the results also give an interesting insight into what
makes for a successful cloud project. For example, whilst the most important supporting service for cloud
implementation is security, strategy and direction also featured highly. Users need help to make sure that
their cloud implementations are technically proficient but also need consultancy and advice to ensure that
their cloud strategy is sound.”
